Man Loses Top of His Head in Brain Operation

Reuters has this story today:

"The man sought compensation of at least 20,000 euros on the grounds that the prosthesis caused him headaches, affected his balance and made him unduly sensitivity to the weather."
But he didn't get that.
"Compensation of 3,000 euros was “appropriate and sufficient,” the court ruled. “The experts consulted by the court concluded the new skull roof was better than the original”."

UK School Uniforms to Get GPS Tracking

As if growing up in England wasn't bad enough already, with ID cards, tracking devices and hovering surveillance robots, super-square clothing company Trutex is set to embed GPS tracking into school uniforms.

"Trutex sponsored an online survey of parents and children to gauge the response to this spy-tech clothing. Unsurprisingly, parents were in favor – 59% of them said they would be interested in using satellite tracking to stalk their offspring, and almost half of the still-naive under 12s said they would wear them. Teenagers weren't so sure, but then teenagers won't do anything they're told.

Schools, too, are interested, ostensibly to reduce truancy, but more likely to catch the kids bumming a quick fag behind the bike sheds. [Note: This is British English for "borrow a cigarette"]"

Wii wins the console war! For now…

The Register:

"According to stats from the week ending August 5th, Microsoft’s Xbox 360 sold 10.32 million, Nintendo’s Wii followed with 10.10 million. They led war between the consoles and the PS3 was languishing with only 4.11 million units sold worldwide."

"New data shows that in a frame of one week, 310,000 Wii’s got new owners - Xbox 360 was sold in decent 110.000 units, while PS3 sold only 50,000 units. New numbers keep Xbox 360 in the lead with 10.43 million, Wii is now a close second with 10.41 million and PS3 remains the backmarker with 4.16 million consoles sold."
"Since the site will not be updated until next week, Wii has probably already outsold Xbox 360 and now has the lead in the console war."

Of course not everyone agrees that Nintendo will be able to sustain the success of the Wii. PS3 and 360 fanboys, er, I mean neutral industry pundits say:

“The Wii will fade,” they say, suggesting that the machine’s novel motion-controls and antiquated graphics technology will soon cause the system to wane in popularity."
And with the release of the Xbox 360 Elite in Europe this month The Xbox is on it's way back.

American Men have Less Sex

Sorry dude, but guys in other countries are having more sex with more women than you, up to 70 times more a year in fact.

I know, it doesn’t make sense. Pop culture and the Internet would have us believe that American men are the most oversexed stallions on the planet, that every girl is 20, tanked, and topless. Yet there are stats according to Men’s Health survey of 40,000 readers worldwide, men in other parts of the world have more sex.

England: Partners can’t even wait to get back to the flat. Twice as many Brits as Americans report having had sex on public transportation and in alleyways and gardens.

Australia: Almost 75 percent of Aussies have had sex on the road.

Romania: When Romanian men want a woman, they tell her.

China: Forget the 3-day rule. In China, men follow up the day after a successful date–by e-mail.

Italy: It’s no secret that good food, wine, and conversation lead to great sex.

India: Indian men know that the journey is almost always more interesting than the destination.

Netherlands: Lovers in the Netherlands know what they want–and how to ask for it. Sixty-four percent of Dutch men and women are confident asserting their needs during sex.

Greece: Americans are bombarded with sexual imagery all day, yet we’re closemouthed about sex. Not in Greece.

Happy Belated Birthday Compact Disc

From BBC News

"Exactly 25 years ago the world's first compact disc was produced at a Philips factory in Germany, sparking a global music revolution" More than 200 billion CD's have been sold since 17 August 1982.

Abba had the first CD to0 be produced (The Visitors).

Piet Kramer, who was a member of the optical group at Philips during the disc's development, told the BBC "When Philips teamed up with Sony to develop the CD, our first target was to win over the world for the CD. We did this by collaborating openly to agree on a new standard. For Philips, this open innovation was a new approach and it paid off."

UK ISPs tell the BBC “We’ll throttle your iPlayer unless you pay up!”

Ars Technica has this story today.

"While the network neutrality debate can sometimes feel a bit theoretical in the US, it’s a live issue in Europe, and this week it hit the pages of newspapers across the UK. What made news was a set of demands by UK ISPs (Internet Service Providers), which banded together to tell the BBC that the ISPs would start to throttle the Corporation’s new iPlayer service because it could overwhelm their networks. Unless the BBC pays up, of course. Tiscali appears to be leading the charge, though ISPs like BT and Carphone Warehouse are also said to be involved. Tiscali UK CEO Mary Turner told the Financial Times, “The Internet was not set up with a view to distributing video. We have been improving our capacity, but the bandwidth we have is not infinite. If the iPlayer really takes off, consumers accessing the Internet will get very slow service and call their ISPs to complain.” The answer, from the ISP perspective, is to start throttling bandwidth used to download content to the iPlayer “catch-up” service."

Man Smuggles Monkey on Plane

This story begs the question what security measures will be put in place to stop it happening again.

"(AXcess News) New York - A man was caught smuggling a small marmoset monkey into the U.S. on board a plane flight from Peru. The man made it into Ft. Lauderdale before boarding a flight to LaGuardia with the monkey tucked neatly underneath his hat, though the animal became restless on the plane when other passengers noticed it crawling out from underneath his hat and reported it to flight attendants.

Apparently the marmoset monkey was well behaved as he sat quietly in the man’s lap for the rest of the flight to New York.

When the flight landed in New York, police and animal control were waiting where the man was taken away for questioning and the marmoset monkey taken into custody. It is unknown whether the man will be charged with anything, though it is illegal to import animals without proper clearance.

The monkey is now in quarantine where he will remain for next month and could possibly end up a resident at local zoo. Authorities named the little monkey “Spirit”.

The monkeyshine took place on a Spirit Airlines flight, though the airline did not say whether the man would have to pay for the monkey’s ticket. Apparently the little marmoset monkey was not carrying any identification or credit cards at the time he was taken into custody in New York. The Department of Homeland Security did not say whether the monkey was being considered a possible terrorist suspect for entering the United States illegally, though Great Britain said they permit the monkey residency if he were to be sent to Guantanamo Bay as they were going to bring five British residents back who were being held there and had room on the flight."

New Copyright

I have changed the Creative Commons license on my blog, site, programs site, programs blog and videos to a Attribution-Noncommercial-Share Alike 3.0 licence. given you more flexibility with use my work and me more time to make it.

Back on Blogger

I'm now using Blogger and Google Pages again as the HTML restrictions on Wordpress.com was to much. I use a lot of HTML and other web programming and formatting code, in my blog and site. Plus the ad restrictions, I don't make much of the ads and I thought I'd be able to do without, But the very little free space you get for free on wordpress ment I would be losing more money for hosting the blog and site.

So the reason for coming back are:

  • More free storage
  • Can use HTML
  • Can have ads
  • Better support
  • Free to post almost anything I want
  • Good things are coming to Blogger

I'm Moving

I'm moving my blog to WordPress you can read it here. I may post her some times but everything I post here will also be on WordPress. Some parts of my site will also be on wordpress as it allows static pages similar to a website.

I wrote "I have desided to make the move from Blogger to WordPress. WordPress offers some better features like static pages and password protected posts and pages. although it is limited in the HTML you can use and stuff you can put in the sidebar. The two sidebars is useful tough.

The fact you can’t have ads is bit bit of a downer as both all my Blogger blogs and Google Pages site’s have ads. This along with the limited HTML and only 50MB of free storage (post and pages do not count against that only pictures and files) could make me move back to blogger

One of the main reasons for moving to WordPress was the static pages allowing me to build a website easily as I plan to get my own domain (example.com) later this year, early next, and I find WordPress also offers better support for that. The templates are also aimed at more of a site than blog.

The posting in WordPress is also better as the web-based text editor is larger and easy to use. That extras can be brought individually and I like this as I don’t have to pay for stuff I wont us like the CSS editor and unlimited private user. I am the only who post to blog/site and I’d like to keep it that way." earlier on WordPress.

If you would like help setting up a WordPress.com Blog or Site please contact me or call my software support service for free.

New Search

On my blog, site, programs site, programs blog and videos you will find a new search powered by Google. The search will search all of the sites/blogs I update (write for).

The search is built with Google Co-Op and runs ads for me. The results page is hosted on my site no matter where you search from. You can search from the search pages on the programs site and my site, the sidebar in my blog, programs blog, and videos and the home page for the search on Google Co-Op.

I'm maintaining the search myself so please be patient and report any bug to me.

I Got on Pownce

I got invited to Pownce though InviteShare (read about it here). Pownce is like twitter but with more to it. TechCrunch wrote "Pownce looks to be a web based sharing network with an optional desktop client (built on Adobe Air) for advanced features. Without having had the opportunity to test it, it looks to be overlapping with AllPeers and Pando, and possibly others. It also clearly has basic social networking features - see Rose’s profile page for the service here." about it

You can share a message, link, file or event and it can be done though the site or a desktop application running on Adobe AIR.

Pownce is from Kevin Rose's who also confounded Digg and Revision3.

Veronica is Leaving

Today Veronica Belmont confirmed the rumours.
She Said "Leaving CNET is going to be bittersweet; it’s been a fantastic three years, and I’ve worked with some amazing people. When I first joined the company, as an audio producer (intern!), I never thought that things would progress the way they did. But then I had to go and open my big mouth on Buzz Out Loud, and they never got me to shut it again. Tom Merritt and Molly Wood are two of the smartest (and most awesome) people I know, and leaving Buzz is going to be the hardest part." in her blog today.
She also went on to present videos for CNET TV and present some other podcasts for CNET, including MP3 Insider and Crave.

Her last day at CNET is going to be Friday 20th July. From then on she will be making a daily video for the people powered search Mahalo about top searches.

I'm Now on Facebook

I have completed my Facebook profile now. I will (try to) keep it up to date, unlike my MySpace profile which I stop using the day after I got it. Facebook make it easy to update and now they've opened the platform there's a gadget for almost everything you want.

Now anyone can now join and its free so why not. It's a good way to keep in-touch.

No Die Hard Tonight

Unfortunately we could see Live Free or Die Hard tonight at cinema as my younger brother was considered to young to get in for the 15 rated film despite begin there when the tickets were brought. No worries though I'll we'll be watching it as a family tomorrow on the smaller screen in our front room.

It was the biggest incentive to piracy I have yet seen. All it made me do was come home and find the link to download it that saw earlier. The only thing stopping me download it then was the tickets were already paid for and watching it on the big screen would of been a much better experiences.

Changes are Over With (for now anyway)

Yesterday was a big day for changes in my blogs and sites. Well you'll be pleased to know that I'm done with the changes, for today anyway.

I'm going to see Die Hard 4 tonight, so there's very little I can do. I do have some ideas for more updates but they will have to wait until some to the Blogger in Draft features have there bugs ironed out.

If you have any ideas on how I can improve any of my blogs and/or sites please let me know, you can leave comments, use the contact me form in the side bar or email me (my email is in my Blogger profile).

Adverts are Now on My Site and Blog Aswell

I have now added adverts to my site and blog. These ads are also run by Google.

Ads in my blog are in the same layout as my video's and programs blog read about them here.

The adverts on my site are in a similar location to those on my programs site down the right hand side of the page.

These ads do not feature on every page though for example the software support pages do not have the ads because I already make money from people using the service.

More Changes to My Video's and Programs Blog

Now both my programs blog and video's will have ads (well I do need to make money). The ads are run by Google and are featured at the top of the posts section...

...and Bottom of the sidebar.

As regular readers don't click ads they are not shown in the feed or email updates.

O2 to get iPhone in the UK

According to the BBC O2 will be getting the iPhone contract in the UK. Press reports are saying that the company is set to sign the exclusive deal and should have the phones before Christmas this year.

A spokesman for O2 would not comment on the matter when asked about it.

They are expected to sell for about £300, although no one is predicting the length or data plan on the contract. O2 don't currently have an unlimited data contract, could the iPhone change this.

I wont be getting one and now I'm defiantly not getting one (if they get the contract) I don't like O2's customer service and I wont be using them due to that. Although i might get a second generation if they get some features, I current have a Nokia n95 and I am very happy with it.

iPhone Makes Money

This guy can get money out of his iPhone. That's one feature makes it worth the $600 plus the two year contract.

Yea it's all fake but the timing this guy has.

My favourite is the Stock apps OR the X-Ray function.

Blog Updated

I have removed SnapShot (previously called Snap Preview Anywhere) from all my blogs including this one, My Videos and My Programs, as I had some problems with a template earlier today and when viewing the site I noticed how annoying the new versions of them are. So they had to go, sorry if you liked them but I no longer find them useful.

I've have also started using labels again as these help, a lot more than I thought, when searching.

Super Dangerous Hotdog Electrocution Recipe

The Gadget Lab has this posting today "First off: Do not try this at home. Evil Mad Scientist Laboratories have posted a tutorial on "Cooking hot dogs via electrocution", which is as dangerous as it sounds. From the labs:

[Disclaimerzilla: While we could give you lots of warnings about all the different dangers involved and how to possibly skirt them, the simple truth is that this just isn't safe. If you are foolish enough to attempt this, you will have to deal with pointy things, raw electricity out of the wall, hot steam, and the possibility of fire. If that isn't enough, and you succeed, you are still faced with the possibility of having to eat a hot dog. In summary: do not, under any circumstances, cook hot dogs this way.]

The recipe uses a brand new cooking technique, as fast as a microwave and ten times the fun. How does it work? By pumping mains electricity through the hot dog. A standard AC cable is chopped and the bare ends soldered to a pair alligator clips, which clamp onto a couple of forks.

The forks go into the wiener and the switch is (very carefully) thrown. One to two minutes later "swelling, a change in surface shape and luster, and finally smoke and/or cracking indicate doneness."

For a real geek touch, LEDs can be poked into the sausage to light it up like Christmas tree. Unfortunately this renders it inedible. Again. Don't try this. But do go visit the site. It's a very funny read"

DARPA funds laser-guided bullets

A posting on Engadget reports " In case you didn't know, part of DARPA's job is just to think up some totally outrageous stuff and then begin to throw money at it. Well, its brain-trust must be working overtime this month, because as a follow up to the invisible, shoot-through shield, we're getting laser-guided bullets. On the very same "budget item justification sheet" in which the aforementioned sci-fi shield is proposed, DARPA honchos "justify" the laser guided bullet project, which will fund research into a low cost, high performance solution for designing "new guidance technologies" that will enable steering of bullets in flight. The hope with this technology is that compact targeting systems (to be embedded in said projectiles) will enable "overmatching fire power" and increased "first shot effectiveness", in addition to potentially cutting down on friendly fire and collateral damage -- and retroactively making JFK's "one-gunman" assassination plausible."

Belkin's Washable Mouse and Mouse Trap

A Posting on Crave today report of a washable mouse "Now that fellow Craver Rich Demuro has shown that we can dry our hands properly at long last, it's time to revisit an idea whose time may finally have come: washable computer equipment.

Most of the submergible peripherals we've seen to date are keyboards, but now there's a mouse to go with them. Belkin's cleverly named "Washable Mouse" can take extended bubble baths because of a unique design that places uses a "scroll pad" instead of the usual wheel, according to Gizmodo.

This comes as good news to those of us in the OCD community who don't trust fancy titanium dioxide finishes that supposedly ward off bacteria. For our money, nothing beats good old soap and water. Well, that and maybe a Lego dishwasher."

USB hub opens letters, wakes you up

Never again will you have to suffer the pitiable indignation of owning a USB hub which only has one lowly "hubbing" function. Enter the Shenzhen Sunstars USB hub, letter opener, and alarm clock. Yeah, I know you have actual hands for doing things like opening letters, and a phone or watch for alarms, but are either of those things self-powered with four USB 2.0 ports? Thought not.

Google to Microsoft: more changes to Vista, please

A posting on Engadget is reporting "Just when you thought the bickering over Vista's search capabilities were finished, along comes Google to fuel the nearly extinguished flame. Apparently, Microsoft's actual filing that spelled out its intentions to alter the search functionality within Vista wasn't as clear cut as previously understood, and now Google is out for even more blood. Google's chief legal officer, David Drummond, called the remedies "a step in the right direction," but also declared that the changes "should be improved further to give consumers greater access to alternate desktop-search providers." Essentially, it seems like Google will be barking up Redmond's proverbial tree until Microsoft allows users to disable Vista's built-in search (or better yet, choose Google) entirely. Oh, the drama."

Wednesday, 20 June 2007

Google Stares Down Microsoft And Wins

TechCrunch is reporting "Microsoft has agreed to make changes to Vista in response to a complaint by Google alleging that Vista’s inbuilt search functionality competed unfairly with Google Desktop Search.

According to a NY Times report, Google’s complaint was made confidentially in line with rules established as part of a previous settlement over anti-competitive behaviour by Microsoft. The settlement between state prosecutors, the Justice Department and Microsoft will avert the prospect of litigation over the matter.

The changes Microsoft will make to Vista have not yet been made public.

It’s an interesting case. Microsoft has a long history of anti-competitive behaviour however in recent years the company has been a far better corporate citizen, in large part due to the terms imposed on it by previous settlements. On the surface it seems a little strange that Microsoft could be in this position; Vista’s search capabilities really do nothing more than deliver decent search functionality out of the box for Windows. Search functionality has been available in some form or another in ever version of Windows since Windows 95, the difference being that previously those search capabilities have been substandard compared to offerings from Google and Yahoo with their own respective desktop search programs. Whatever the actual details of the case may be (and we may never know) it’s a win for Google. For Microsoft, questions remain: is this simply a case of Microsoft waiting to fight another day, or is the company now seriously spooked by both the threat of anti-competitive litigation and Google? It’s certainly very un-Microsoft like to simply settle without a fight."

How a Nano can keep your pants on

Crave is reporting "Before you trash that busted gadget, ask yourself this: How would it look strapped to my waist? Don't laugh--it could be the next fashion trend.

Little did we know that a broken Mac mouse was only the beginning when a graphic artist turned it into a belt buckle. Now, the concept has progressed to a working iPod Nano in the form of the "Tunebuckle," a clear case that can be worn without compromising access to the device's controls, Shiny Shiny says. Once again, our distinct lack of fashion sense has been proven beyond doubt. (Twice in one morning, in fact.)

Aesthetics notwithstanding, we think this accoutrement merits praise for one simple reason: It's not called the "iBuckle.""

BBC iPlayer

I've got on the beta testing list for the BBC iPlayer, on-demand BBC TV from the past 7 days. The only problem I have with it is the lack of convent but BBC say more will be added as we go though the testing, The time a takes for shows to be available I'm still waiting to get Doctor Who from yesterday, but the main problem I have is the tight DRM on it.

You can download a show that was shown in the past 7 days and keep it for up to 30 days but as soon as you watch it you only have up to 7 days to watch it again. the DRM also stops you using a media extender, such as the Xbox 360, to get the content on the big screen.

Apart from that it's a great idea from the BBC and a good program.

I've been hard at work updating my Windows live Space. I've changed the theme, updated the blog, music list, added two more lists, blogs and sites, photo's, and profile. take a look.

Internet Pornography Stats

Check out this video from Good Magazine that shows a number of stats about the Internet pornography industry, in an “almost” not safe for work format. It is staggering how much actual money flows through porn and how many people are involved in the industry:

  • 89% of porn is created in the U.S.
  • $2.84 billion in revenue was generated from U.S. porn sites in 2006
  • $89/second is spent on porn
  • 72% of porn viewers are men
  • 260 new porn sites go online daily

YouTube to Offer Cash Payouts

YouTube's spreading its cash to top contributors, and there's plenty to go round.

Lonelygirl15, LisaNova, HappySlip, renetto, Smosh, and Valsartdiary – the names trip off the tongue. The A-List of YouTube.

But now they're to be rewarded for all their hard uploading work. The ubiquitous video-sharing site, has announced that it's to share out its lolly to the top contributors that make the site what it is.

No word yet on whether the bounty will be bestowed on us more casual uploaders but co-founder, Chad Hurley, did state in January that revenue sharing with users was on the cards. I'm firing up the camcorder as I speak...

please let me know what you think of the changes (whatever you think it's not going it took to long to get it like this)

New Computer

I haven't been able to blog that much lately, that's because my computer got fucked. I didn't bother to fix it as I was getting a new one, it just took longer to be delivered then I thought.

Anyway it's here now I set it up the other night and I've now got most of the things I need on it. Today I'll be testing it on Rise of Legends, I got this computer because my old one wouldn't run it and some over stuff, if it runs that it will run everything else. I update this post when I've tested it.

SellaBoand

SellaBand is great for both music artists and those who want to make some money.

The aim for artists is to get US$50,000 pledged on the site (by believers) and then go to the recording studio to make their album. They will get a cut of the sales and ad revenue.

The believers of that artist pledge US$10 (about £5.06) to help the artists to the 50,000 mark, you can buy more than one part at US$10 each. Once the artists gets there all the believers get limited editions on the album and get a cut of the sales and ad revenue.

Here's some artists I'd like to see reach the 50:
BulletProof Messenger
Steel Temple
Awake

Captain America died

NEW YORK (AFP) - Captain America, the comic book superhero with a penchant for figure-hugging body suits in red, white and blue, has died at the age of 89, shot dead in New York.

The Marvel comic book hero is written out of the script in copies hitting the newsstands Wednesday after more than 65 years fighting villains, felled by a sniper's bullet on the steps of a Manhattan court house.

"Breaking news: Few details are clear at this time, but the scene outside the Federal Courthouse in Manhattan is a portrait of chaos and confusion as a former superhero has been shot," Marvel comics said on its website.

Captain America was actually Steve Rogers, born on US Independence Day, July 4, 1917. He was created in 1941 but lacking any superpowers looked somewhat ill-equipped to battle evil next to counterparts like Superman.

Draped in the American flag, a giant "A" on his mask and a shield that handily doubled as a discus, Captain America was part of the US war effort, created just months before the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor.

His first cover saw him punching Adolf Hitler in the face and he entered his golden age after the United States joined World War II. But he soon faded in popularity after the war and was retired in 1950 before returning in the 1960s.

However, like Superman's return from the dead after being killed off in 1993, the door appears to be open for Captain America to return.

Co-creator Joe Simon, himself a little older than Captain America at 93, told the New York Daily News he was saddened by his character's demise. "It's a hell of a time for him to go. We really need him now," he said.

The Death of PlayStation

Why the PlayStation brand has died. by You Tube user: heavyarms117.

There right all the things I use my Xbox 360 for still aren't in the PS3. That plus the hugh (over priced) price tag is why I wont be getting one. Plus the surfing the net stuff, I have a perfectly good computer for that.

I have never liked the Wii but I'd rather spend my money on the it and a mountain of games I'd probably never play on.

I think I'll stick with my Xbox 360, it works great and does what I want it to for now.

Bye bye PlayStation.

Free WI-FI Campaign - Update

An astonishing 36273 of you signed up to the free WI-FI campaign. So with the hefty petition in hand The Gadget Show contacted the government. But they refused it as well! They said that because they are a television programme they couldn't submit the petition.

So, instead they rang all the big coffee chains and asked them if they would consider giving out free wifi. One chain is thinking of doing this soon and the hope is that others will follow.

In the meantime, they've put a free wifi hotspot locator box on the front of their website. Type in your address and it'll tell you where you can get free wifi in your area.

Also, if you're a business or if you have a local business near you that you'd like to provide free wifi, then they've got this handy guide to how you can do it yourself. It's been written by LetsGoWifi who specialise in installing public wifi networks - so if you don't want to put things in yourself you can always contact them. Another alternative is www.free-hotspot.com who can help you install your wifi and then provide the service afterwards.
